Governor refuses Buzdar’s resignation

The Punjab situation worsens as the governor refuses Buzdar’s resignation only hours before Hamza takes the oath of office.

LAHORE: Just hours before CM-elect Hamza Shahbaz Sharif’s oath-taking ceremony, Punjab Governor Omar Sarfaraz Cheema, in a surprising decision Saturday, rejected Usman Buzdar’s resignation, citing constitutional conditions not being met.

The development happened after the Lahore High Court (LHC) issued an order instructing National Assembly Speaker Raja Pervaiz Ashraf to administer the oath to Hamza Shahbaz today at 11:30 a.m.

In a letter to Punjab Assembly Speaker Pervaiz Elahi, Omar Sarafraz Cheema stated that Usman Buzdar’s March 28 resignation letter was not in accordance with the rules because it was addressed to the prime minister rather than the governor, as required by sub-section 8 of Article 130 of the Constitution.

“The resignation was not addressed to the governor, which was unlawful and thus rejected,” Cheema explained.
