How easy is it to drive an electric car across Wales?

New petrol and diesel automobiles will be prohibited in the UK in less than eight years, while electric vehicle sales have been steadily increasing.

However, surveys show that concern about the quality of the UK’s charging infrastructure is now the number one deterrent to newer customers.

I attempted to drive across Wales in a normal electric car to determine if my anxieties were warranted.

In a electric pool vehicle, I travel 175 miles from my home in Cardiff to Nefyn, on the gorgeous Llyn Peninsula in north Wales.

The car’s range was shorter than this trip’s duration, but it was about average for a used electric vehicle (the latest models could do this one-way trip without stopping).

I went there via country roads and then returned on the M4, Wales’ lone highway, to test if there were adequate charging stations on both routes.

I had intended to travel via the A470, Wales’ primary route from south to north, via Builth Wells and Llanidloes, as suggested by my GPS.

However, after discovering that there were only four “quick” public chargers between Cardiff and Nefyn for my travel, I had to alter my plans to avoid stopping for an extended amount of time and being trapped in rural mid Wales.
