A call to assist steel companies in decarbonizing more quickly.

Senior MPs have warned that the UK is moving too slowly to assist its steelworks in transitioning to more environmentally friendly methods of operation.

According to them, it could jeopardize the industry’s future in the country and make the country more reliant on steel imports.

Their report comes after the owners of the UK’s largest steelworks, Port Talbot, called for a government “roadmap” to help the sector decarbonize.

The UK government stated that it had several schemes in place to help the industry transition to a low-carbon future.

Steel currently accounts for 14% of the greenhouse gas emissions produced by UK industry.

However, more and more people are volunteering to help build things like wind turbines and the cleaner, electric vehicles of the future.

These included using hydrogen instead of coal, relying more on scrap steel recycling, and trapping carbon dioxide before it is released into the atmosphere.

In comparison to other countries, the MPs concluded that the UK government’s initiatives to advance these technologies “lacked ambition.”

During the inquiry, steel executives stated that unless ministers present a clear strategy and funding to drive progress, the industry risks “further contraction.”
