22 years after visiting the “world’s most inbred family,” a filmmaker returns home.
A filmmaker who documented the lives of an inbred family 22 years ago has returned, revealing that two of them sleep in the same single bed.
Donors have raised thousands of dollars in the hopes of evicting the family from their back-country shack.
The Whittakers live in a remote rural area of West Virginia, largely cut off from civilization.
They’ve had limited access to education, with only one relative, Timmy, claiming to have completed high school.
Photographer Mark Laita met the Whittakers 20 years ago and has returned several times to their cramped home where they live with several dogs.
The relatives suffer from a variety of severe physical and mental impairments, with some unable to articulate and speaking only in grunts. It is thought to be the result of inbreeding.
In April, the filmmaker organized a fundraiser to help them escape the squalor of their dilapidated, falling-apart house.
When Mark went to see the family after they received the generous donations, he discovered that they had spent the entire amount on a number of home improvements, including a new truck, roof, kitchen remodel, and a coal heater.
One of the relatives shows Mark around their cramped home, where two of the adult men share a single bed and an air mattress.
