As the United Kingdom celebrates its Platinum Jubilee, Australia will break away from the Queen and Royal Family.
After being bound to Great Britain for over 200 years, Australia’s new government wants to depose the Queen as its head of state.
The announcement came just two days before Britain was set to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, with Her Majesty becoming the first UK Monarch to reach the age of 70.
Anthony Albanese, Australia’s newly elected Labor leader, established a new position in his government as “assistant minister for the republic.” “and suggested a referendum on whether the Queen should be replaced as head of state.
Matt Thistlethwaite, a Sydney MP, has accepted the position and stated that when Prince Charles becomes King, “that would be the natural point, I think, when a lot of Australians would say, ‘OK, the Queen has done a fantastic job, but it’s now time for us to look to the future.'”
When the appointment was announced, prominent Republican Peter FitzSimons tweeted, “Let the record show, for the first time in the history of the Commonwealth, Australia has a member of the government singularly devoted to removing the crown and assisting Australia in becoming a republic.”
Thistlethwaite stated on Wednesday that he hopes to educate Australians about the current constitutional arrangements, but that the only referendum that will be held during his first term is the referendum on the Constitution.
