Worshippers at a mosque in east London have been attacked with eggs, prompting a police investigation.<\/p>\n

The incident at the Ilford Islamic Centre happened this week, while the Muslim community continues to observe the holy month of Ramadan – which ends next week.<\/p>\n

Local politicians have condemned the incident as a \u201cdisgraceful act of hatred and violence\u201d that has \u201cno place\u201d in the community.<\/p>\n

\"Worshippers-pelted-with-eggs-at-London-mosque-in-act-of-hatred-during-Ramadan-rapidnews\"The Metropolitan Police said it received a report of racially aggravated criminal damage at around 11pm on Tuesday evening at a mosque in Albert Road, Ilford.<\/p>\n

The Federation of Redbridge Muslim Organisations tweeted that eggs and other items had been thrown at worshippers and that five people were hit, but none seriously injured.<\/p>\n

The Met said that so far there have been no arrests.<\/p>\n

Ahmed Nawaz, director and secretary of the centre, said the incident was \u201ca shame\u201d but the community remained strong.<\/p>\n

He told PA: \u201cI was caught by surprise because leading up to this we had a very quiet and peaceful 20-odd nights, and then this happened.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe weren\u2019t expecting it this kind of time in the period of reflection for everyone, having gone through Covid.\u201d<\/p>\n

He added: \u201cIt\u2019s a shame (but) we\u2019re used to it.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re a strong community and we take it on the chin. It makes us weary rather than fearful.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mr Nawaz said police and local authorities had been \u201cvery supportive\u201d following the incident but that attacks against the Muslim community were often \u201cglossed over\u201d in the media.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe just want to be treated like humans, just like everyone else,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Sam Tarry, Labour MP for Ilford South, said: \u201cI am shocked and saddened to hear of this Islamophobic attack against Ilford Mosque.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese disgraceful acts of violence and hatred have no place in Ilford, and I hope that the perpetrators face justice as soon as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jas Athwal, Labour leader of Redbridge Council, said the council would continue to work closely with police and that security in areas surrounding the mosque would be increased.<\/p>\n

\u201cRacist incidents like this have no place in our borough and we will work with our friends and neighbours at Albert Road Mosque, and the police to ensure the safety of all worshippers.\u201d<\/p>\n

Detective Chief Superintendent Stephen Clayman, in charge of policing for the Redbridge area, said: \u201cWe take all reports of hate crime very seriously and have launched an investigation.<\/p>\n

\u201cIncidents like this will not be tolerated and my officers will be undertaking enhanced patrols in the area to provide reassurance to the local community and visitors to the mosque.\u201d<\/p>\n
