Nobel Laureate Dmitry Muratov told Novaya Gazeta Europe that the incident caused “extreme burning” in his eyes, which he stated happened on a train from Moscow to Samara.
According to the Telegram channel of Novaya Gazeta Europe, his assailant added, “Muratov, here’s one for our guys.”

After Novaya Gazeta, Russia’s biggest independent daily, was forced to close its doors last week owing to government pressure, newspaper staffers founded Novaya Gazeta Europe.
It was Russia’s last major independent media outlet critical of President Vladimir Putin’s rule, and it has had a long history of feuding with the Kremlin.
Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine began on February 24, certain websites have been blocked or restricted.
The Russian media regulator, Roskomnadzor, has given a second official warning to Novaya Gazeta, which has been acting more like a censor recently.
It’s unclear why the publication was given a heads-up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to Roskomnadzor, the newspaper failed to identify an unknown non-governmental organisation as a “foreign agent” as required by Russian law in its reporting.
It made no mention of the disputed report.
Since Moscow sent troops into Ukraine in February, pressure on liberal Russian media outlets has increased, with most mainstream media and state-controlled organisations adopting the Kremlin’s characterization of the conflict.
Threatening messages have been painted on the doors of many opposition activists’ apartments.
