Army General Alexander Dvornikov, the director of Russia’s Southern Military District, has been chosen theatre commander of Russia’s military campaign in Ukraine, according to a US official and a European official.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When President Vladimir Putin ordered forces to Syria in September 2015 to support Syrian President Bashar al-government, Assad’s Dvornikov was the first commander of Russian military operations in the nation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From September 2015 to June 2016, when Dvornikov was in charge of Syria, Russian planes aided the Assad regime and its supporters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They surrounded rebel-held eastern Aleppo, bombing densely populated districts and killing many civilians. Syrian government forces took control of the city in December 2016.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
