Bencic, who was competing in her maiden clay-court final, fought her way through a back-and-forth third set before winning in 2 hours and 35 minutes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bencic is the first Swiss woman to win the WTA 500 event since former World No. 1 Martina Hingis in 1999.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I’m really delighted to win the first title on clay,” Bencic remarked after the match.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I think I fought for approximately a week.” I was two points away from being eliminated in the first round, and I feel this is how you win a tournament.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
