This year’s Turner Prize for contemporary art in the United Kingdom will be won by four artists acclaimed for their solo shows, according to Tate Britain, the award’s organizer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The selection for 2022 contrasts with this year’s lineup, which saw five artist collectives compete for the renowned, but often contentious British visual arts prize for the first time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Heather Phillipson, widely known in the United Kingdom for her artwork of a large swirl of duplicate whipped cream, topped with a sculpted cherry, fly, and drone placed in London’s Trafalgar Square, is among the nominees this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It was titled “The End” and rested on the empty fourth plinth on the world-famous landmark in the heart of the British capital for two years starting in January 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Phillipson, who works with video, sculpture, and drawing, was nominated for that piece as well as a solo exhibition at Tate Britain called “Rupture No 1: blowtorching the bitten peach.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The judges “applauded Phillipson’s bold and intelligent method of splicing absurdity, tragedy, and imagination to examine urgent and complex issues,” according to a statement from the museum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In part for a solo show at Hong Kong’s Blind spot Gallery, Toronto-born, London-based artist Sin Wai Kin \u2014 formerly known as Victoria Sin, who identifies as non-binary \u2014 is among the other contenders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Their art realizes fictional narratives to reflect everyday realities of desire, identification, and consciousness,” Tate Britain noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
