The California woman accused of lying about a 2016 kidnapping that spurred a global manhunt conceded Tuesday that her story about being kidnapped was fake, saying she was \u201ctruly humiliated\u201d and would spend the rest of her life attempting to make amends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a statement released by her lawyer, Sherri Papini, 39, apologised to her family, friends, and all those who were harmed by her story, as well as those who sought to help her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She declared, \u201cI will work for the rest of my life to make atonement for what I have done.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Papini agreed to plead guilty to two counts of mail fraud and one count of lying to a law enforcement official, both of which have a potential sentence of 20 years in prison.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
