According to Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky, Russia has launched an offensive on Ukraine’s eastern Donbas region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Moscow launched rocket and artillery attacks on cities, and Mr Zelensky declared the “battle for the Donbas has begun” in a televised speech.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Ukraine’s top security official, Oleksiy Danilov, Russia attempted to break through Ukrainian front lines in the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The offensive had been expected for a long time after Russia’s failure to seize Kyiv.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At first, Russia appeared to want to take control of important Ukrainian cities and overthrow the government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
