Julian Assange, the co-founder of Wikileaks, appeared via videolink at the Westminster magistrate court hearing, which was a “short but critical point in the case.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He informed the chief magistrate that he had no choice but to pass the case over to Mark Summers QC, the Home Secretary, because Assange’s team could not provide new evidence at this time, but there had been “additional developments.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The home secretary had been promised a “serious proposal” on US sentence and terms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
After Assange’s appeal against his extradition was dismissed by the Supreme Court last month, the brief hearing was held. He was attempting to reverse a December high court judgement that ruled he may be extradited to the US if US authorities provided assurances about his prison circumstances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Chief Magistrate Paul Goldspring issued an extradition order during the seven-minute session.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
‘I am duty obligated,’ Goldspring informed Assange in layman’s words.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Assange’s legal team also has a variety of other options for fighting his extradition. This could involve filing an appeal on additional legal arguments that he brought but lost in the first instance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
