The government of Fiji announced on Wednesday that a superyacht apparently owned by a sanctioned Russian oligarch has been barred from leaving the island nation’s waters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to a statement sent to AFP by the Pacific state’s prosecution office, the High Court granted an order on Tuesday to prevent the luxurious boat Amadea from departing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to some sources, the yacht is linked to oligarch Suleiman Kerimov, who is a target of US and EU sanctions for Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After receiving a request for “mutual legal assistance” from the US government, Fiji’s director of public prosecutions claimed it acted under the authority of the attorney general.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The prosecutors’ office said a separate US warrant to take the yacht would be “decided at a later date.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It stated that the next court hearing would be held on Thursday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fijian police acknowledged last week that they were looking into the expensive yacht, which allegedly sailed from Latin America before arriving in Fiji without customs clearance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Officers were investigating whether there had been any customs or immigration violations, as well as any drug, guns, or money laundering issues, according to the police commissioner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the website which tracks the wealthiest people’s yachts, the Amadea is valued $325 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
