Elon Musk has agreed to acquire Twitter in return for a vow to reduce platform limitations, raising questions about what this means for the “digital town square.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Human rights groups are afraid that a lack of moderation may result in a rise in hate speech.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many Twitter <\/a>users are also asking whether this means that accounts suspended by the corporation will be restored.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Donald Trump was the most public figure to be suspended.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Following the announcement of the acquisition, human rights organisations raised concern about hate speech on Twitter, as well as the authority it would give Mr Musk<\/a>, a self-described “free speech absolutist.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He has been vocal in his criticism of Twitter’s content filtering policies, claiming that the network must be a legitimate forum for free expression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Amnesty International stated on Twitter, “We are worried with any moves that Twitter may take to degrade enforcement of the regulations and systems established to safeguard users.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The last thing we need is a Twitter that willfully ignores violent and abusive rhetoric directed at users, particularly those who are disproportionately affected, such as women, non-binary people, and others.”<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
