Amber Heard was asked if she recognized the name Carly Simon in court last week, shortly after her lawyers presented an exhibit of a mirror that Johnny Depp<\/a> had defaced in tight, punctuated script after severing part of his middle finger in what his former wife described as a drug- and alcohol-induced blackout.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Call Carly Simon,” Deep wrote in his note. She put it more succinctly. Bye.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Heard testified that she had never heard of Simon or her work. But it’s reasonable to assume Depp was referring to Simon’s 1972 single, you\u2019re So Vain. His lawyers may take up the matter in cross-examination the next week. Or the following week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So it is with the defamation of Depp and Heard. So it is with the defamation case involving Depp and Heard in Fairfax, Virginia. With horrific charges of domestic and sexual assault, this is undoubtedly a warning tale. But there’s also a man-woman fight, part gender-switch Sunset Boulevard, part Mean Girls, with flashbacks and still photos shot in Bela Lugosi’s old house, which is appropriate considering the evil if not vampiric nature of the connection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After attorneys present final arguments on May 27, it will be clear which narrative jurors chose. For the time being, with the court gone next week \u2014 the judge, Penny Azcarate, is attending a separate judicial conference – jurors are left to consider Heard’s final two days of testimony.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Two skilled performers on the witness stand could be equally resonant regardless of age.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Heard explained, “We weren’t doing normal life stuff.” “We weren’t caught in traffic with each other, driving to the grocery store, and going about our daily lives.” We were hiding in various locations around the globe.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That bubble burst when Depp began to vanish and she had no idea how to find or contact him, she stated. Depp got threatened by her career and jealous of her co-stars, according to Heard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Depp has testified that he never hit Heard and that she was the one who abused him, including throwing a bottle of vodka at him and cutting his finger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Heard said that in order to assist Depp stay sober, she sought treatment from Al-Anon and attempted to distance herself from the relationship, but was drawn back in whenever Depp reached brief periods of sobriety and when the “monster” that the pair referred to as his intoxicated persona was reduced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But, she claimed, his efforts were thwarted at every turn by an entourage \u2014 his security team, assistants, and hangers-on \u2013 who protected him from the effects of his drug and alcohol abuse. His bodyguards brought him into their rented home in London “like a baby,” she added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Heard’s PR team has accused Depp of failing to accept responsibility outside of the courts. “One of Ms. Heard’s frustrations is Mr. Depp’s inability to separate fact from fiction – a problem that appears to have migrated to his legal staff,” a spokesman told reporters in an email on Friday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Depp spokesman retorted that Heard gave “the performance of her life” and that his lawyers are eager to question her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Depp’s $50 million defamation claim and Heard’s $100 million counter-claim have divided public relations experts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“This case should serve as a cautionary lesson to high-profile persons who live in the public eye: whether you make an abuse complaint or disclose your personal life in the form of an op-ed, a televised interview, a televised interview, a televised interview, a televised interview,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
