If Sir Keir Starmer is penalised for breaking Covid restrictions, former shadow home secretary Diane Abbott thinks he should reconsider his position as Labour leader.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Durham police are looking into if any laws were breached at an event last year in the city where he was photographed drinking beer in an MP’s office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Ms Abbott, a Labour MP, claimed she did not believe he would be penalized and slammed the “hype created by the Tory press.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sir Keir insisted that he had not infringed any rules.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
On Saturday, when asked if he would resign if penalized, he told reporters: “I was in the office at the time. We paused for a bite to eat. There was no celebration “,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He also stated that he would lead Labour into the next election.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Keir Starmer has my full backing. I’m only making the obvious point that if he receives a fixed penalty notice, he should think about it.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Wes Streeting, the shadow health minister, told the BBC that the thought of Sir Keir leaving would not “entertain” him, adding, “I have great faith and belief that Keir Starmer did the right thing all along.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“We expect that to be the outcome presently,” he said, adding that police previously found “no case to answer” for Sir Keir.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sadiq Khan, the Labour mayor of London, said Sir Keir was eating after “worked really hard all day,” and that this was “a million miles apart from what Boris Johnson was found to have done.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since January, when Mr. Johnson was enmeshed in allegations, Sir Keir has called for his resignation. During lockdown, Covid guidelines were disregarded during parties in Whitehall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
