Hundreds more were injured when the earthquake struck in the early hours,\u00a0triggering panic among the terrified residents of the island.<\/p>\nAt least 34 people were killed after a 6.2-magnitude earthquake rocked Indonesia’s Sulawesi Island early on Friday (Jan 15) morning, said authorities.<\/p>\n

“The latest information we have is that 26 people are dead … in Mamuju city,” said Ali Rahman, head of the local disaster mitigation agency, adding “that number could grow”.<\/p>\n
“Many of the dead are buried under rubble,” he said.<\/p>\n
Separately, the national disaster agency said at least eight people had died in an area south of Mamuju, a city of 110,000 in West Sulawesi province, bringing the total death toll to 34.<\/p>\n
\u201cPraise be to God, for now [we are] ok, but we just felt another aftershock,\u201d said 26-year-old resident Sukri Efendy.<\/p>\n
Darno Majid, chief of the disaster agency in West Sulawesi, told\u00a0Reuters<\/em>\u00a0that 35 people had been killed in Majene, and in the neighbouring district of Mamuju, with more deaths likely to be confirmed as rescue workers fanned out.<\/p>\n Initial information from the national disaster mitigation agency showed that 637 people had been injured in Majene, and two dozen in Mamuju.<\/p>\n No tsunami warning was issued but the head of Indonesia\u2019s Meteorology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), Dwikorita Karnawati, told a news conference that aftershocks could follow, with a possibility that another powerful quake could trigger a tsunami.<\/p>\n There had been at least 26 aftershocks, she said, with Friday\u2019s quake preceded by a 5.9 magnitude quake on Thursday afternoon.<\/p>\n West Sulawesi provincial government spokesman Safaruddin said authorities needed to restore telecommunications, mend several damaged bridges and deliver tents, food and medical supplies.<\/p>\n Pictures of the aftermath appeared on social media as the head of the disaster agency and social affairs minister were scheduled to fly in.<\/p>\n Videos showed residents fleeing to higher ground on motorcycles, and a child trapped under the rubble as people tried to remove debris with their hands.<\/p>\n Straddling the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, Indonesia is regularly hit by earthquakes.<\/p>\n In 2018, a devastating 6.2-magnitude quake and subsequent tsunami struck the\u00a0city of Palu, in Sulawesi, killing thousands.<\/p>\n A 9.1 magnitude quake off the north of Indonesia\u2019s Sumatra island on\u00a0Boxing Day 2004\u00a0triggered a tsunami that swept over coastal areas of Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India, Thailand and nine other countries, killing more than 230,000 people.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" At least 34 people were killed after a 6.2-magnitude earthquake rocked Indonesia’s Sulawesi Island early<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":1626,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"spay_email":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[9],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-1623","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-world"],"yoast_head":"\n
