Eight years after waking up paralyzed, a man on crutches has reached Everest base camp.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Jamie McAnsh, from Cwmbran, Torfaen, suffers from complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS), a chronic and excruciating pain condition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Jamie, however, has realized his childhood dream and reached base camp at 5,364m following an 11-day trek (17,600ft).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He admitted, “There were times during this journey when I didn’t think I was going to make it.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“I was completely spent. It’s been a difficult period “Jamie said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“It wasn’t until the next day that I realized what I’d done.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jamie went to bed “as usual” on January 6, 2014, but awoke the next morning paralyzed from the waist down after rupturing his spine in his sleep.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Jamie was diagnosed with CRPS after another 13 months, a condition that has no cure but often improves over time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He had to relearn how to walk, and after a long rehabilitation, he has regained some mobility but still uses crutches to get around.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
