Indigenous elders met with Prince Charles<\/a> in Canada and urged the Queen to apologize for the “assimilation and genocide” of indigenous youngsters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to RoseAnne Archibald, national leader of the Assembly of First Nations, the prince “acknowledged” mistakes in dealing with indigenous people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Canada is grappling with a controversy in which indigenous children were either killed or abused in residential schools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There has been a clamour for the Queen to apologize over the incident.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall are on a three-day tour of Canada, where the Queen is head of state, to commemorate the Queen’s 96th birthday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ms Archibald requested an apology from Prince Charles on behalf of the Queen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I begged his mother, the Queen<\/a>, the head of the Anglican church, for an apology for whatever transpired in the institutions of assimilation and genocide,” she stated. I also requested an apology from the Crown for the Crown’s shortcomings in that relationship, in our treaty relationship with them.”<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
