Danes will vote in a referendum on whether to end a 30-year opt-out and join the EU’s defense and security policy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Denmark is the only EU member with a defense reservation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, it, like its Nordic neighbors Sweden and Finland, has been rethinking its security policy since Russia launched its war on Ukraine<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Opinion polls show that Danes favor closer European defense ties, which could have an impact on their military future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Similarly, there has been much misunderstanding about what the vote means in a country that is already a member of Nato’s defensive alliance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why is this referendum important?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Danish leaders argue that the regional security situation has changed, requiring Denmark to work harder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I believe wholeheartedly that we must vote yes,” Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said on Sunday during a televised debate. “At a time when Europe needs to fight for security, we must be more united with our neighbors.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But, in order for that to happen, this traditionally Eurosceptic country must have a seat at the table.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For the past 30 years, Denmark has been barred from participating in most European defense and security initiatives due to the defense reservation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“From its inception until now, it has generally resulted in a loss of influence,” said Christine Nissen of the Danish Institute for International Studies. “We are unable to participate in the negotiations. We leave no trace.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
