On Thursday, hundreds of people broke the world record for the largest-ever gathering of mermaids.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The 2022 Mermaid Challenge in Plymouth, Devon, attracted 388 “merfolk,” including men, women, and children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It breaks the previous Guinness World Record for the largest gathering of mermaids and mermen, which stood at 300.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Participants may be shirtless, wear a swimming shirt, a bikini top, a swim costume top, or a clamshell bra.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Their lower half had to resemble a fish, with a flare of material covering their feet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Queen’s Jubilee celebrations were met with a “fabulous turn out,” according to organizer Pauline Barker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Hundreds of merfolk can be seen sitting around the lido in brightly coloured wigs, neon tops, and glitzy tails.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to a spokesman for the event, they have unofficially broken the record, but they need confirmation from Guinness next week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Guinness defines a merperson as a “mythological creature with the top half of their body being that of a human and the bottom half a tail of a fish,” implying that the costumes must meet certain criteria. All participants were required to wear a fishtail costume skirt that was fitted from the waist to the ankles and had a flume or flare of material that extended over and covered the feet.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
