BRITS are making the most of the long Bank Holiday weekend to raise funds for the Queen’s Jubilee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
However, many people will remember that “dread” feeling the morning after a night of partying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Drinkers are plagued by anxiety, or the overwhelming feeling of anxiety that occurs during a hangover.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It makes them wonder what they said or did, how they embarrassed themselves, or if their friends have suddenly turned against them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“People can experience that anxiety as regret and shame about what happened,” Dr Sally Adams, a lecturer in the Department of Psychology Addiction and Mental Health Group at the University of Bath, previously told.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Worrying about what they said or did. It can be general, increasing anxiety about unrelated issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
When we drink our favourite cocktail, wine, or beer, the activity of neurotransmitters in the brain changes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
These brain chemicals are normally well-balanced, allowing us to make clear decisions, focus, and emotionally process information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Alcohol alters this by increasing Gaba levels, which help us feel more relaxed, while decreasing glutamate levels, which control fear and emotions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“The brain is desperate to try and correct that,” Dr. Adams said, “by giving us lower Gaba and increased glutamate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Instead of returning to normal the next day at the level before we began drinking, our brain begins to overcompensate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“This is why we experience anxiety and stress.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
