South Africans have accused Irish airline Ryanair of discriminating against them by requiring them to take an Afrikaans language test on UK flights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The country has 11 official languages, and many people claim they don’t understand Afrikaans, which was imposed during white minority rule.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The quiz contains general knowledge questions about South Africa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Ryanair defended the test, claiming that it weeds out passengers travelling on forged South African passports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Due to the high prevalence of fraudulent South African passports,” it said in a statement, “we require passengers travelling to the UK to fill out a simple questionnaire issued in Afrikaans.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“If they are unable to complete this questionnaire, they will be denied travel and issued a restraining order.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The report questioned Ryanair about why the test had to be taken in Afrikaans rather than any other South African language, but they did not respond.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The quiz includes questions such as what South Africa’s international dialing code is, what its capital city is, and who the country’s current president is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The test, which according to one report is riddled with grammatical and spelling errors, is not required by UK border officials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
