According to the RAC, petrol prices increased by nearly 5p per liter during the week that included the bank holiday, and the price could soon reach 180p per liter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to the motoring organization, the average price of a liter of petrol increased from 173.02p at the start of the week to 177.88p on Sunday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Oil prices remain high as a result of the Ukraine conflict and sanctions aimed at reducing Europe’s reliance on Russia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The government reduced fuel duty by 5p per liter for a year in March.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“More radical government intervention is urgently needed,” said RAC spokesperson Simon Williams, “whether that’s in the form of a further reduction in fuel duty or a VAT cut.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
During the same time period, from 30 May to 5 June, average diesel prices increased from 182.58p to 185.01p.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Unfortunately, we expect the average price of petrol to break through the 180p mark this week, with diesel moving closer to 190p,” said Mr Williams, who called the recent increase “frightening.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Shock and awe is the only way to describe what has been happening at the pump during the half-term break,” said AA fuel price spokesman Luke Bosdet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“The forces driving the surge have been oil rising back above $120 per barrel for the first time since late March, combined with petrol commodity prices being boosted by summer motoring demand,” he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
