Historically found in the south central and southeastern United States, these ticks are now spreading to New Jersey and New York State’s Long Island, with additional reports along the Eastern Seaboard and in parts of the Midwest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
When a person becomes infected, their immune system attacks the alpha-gal molecules found in non-primate mammals such as cows and pigs. This can occur even if the meat being consumed is safe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
