Poorer countries accuse rich countries of betraying them by delaying payment for centuries of climate damage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
They hoped to get compensation discussions on the official agenda of the COP27 climate conference in November.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But that is in doubt on the final day of climate talks in Bonn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Developing countries say they are reeling from climate change caused by the emissions of richer countries over hundreds of years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
They claim they require funds to deal with the effects of climate change because they are more affected than richer countries and have less financial capacity to cope.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
On the back of the COP26 climate conference last year, island states and developing countries agreed to reduce carbon emissions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
However, they claim that the US and Europe have sidelined the issue in the Bonn discussions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“The compromise was based on the understanding that countries would be willing to start talking and making decisions about how to get that finance flowing for loss and damage,” said Alex Scott of the environmental think tank E3G.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“And we haven’t seen that happen here.” Instead, we’ve seen a workshop set up to discuss how we can address some of the issues.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
