“John\u2019s friends and family are happy that he\u2019s finally getting some help and focusing on his health,” a source told.<\/i><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

“His fans know he\u2019s struggled in the past with sobriety, he has talked about it openly. Unfortunately he has struggled again during the pandemic. He\u2019s on board with his recovery, he\u2019s not fighting against rehab.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The comedian, who has recently been promoting the fourth season of Netflix’s animated comedy\u00a0Big Mouth<\/i>, has been open about his past struggles with addiction, even weaving the subject into his stand-up comedy.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s on board with his recovery, he\u2019s not fighting against rehab.\u201d<\/p>\n

In an interview last year, Mulaney revealed he began drinking at age 13. \u201cI drank for attention,\u201d he said. \u201cI was really outgoing, and then at 12, I wasn\u2019t. I didn\u2019t know how to act. And then I was drinking, and I was hilarious again.\u201d<\/p>\n

He said\u00a0in an Esquire cover story\u00a0that his drinking also prompted him to start using drugs. He says that while he never liked smoking pot, he \u201cloved\u201d cocaine and dabbled with prescription drugs.<\/p>\n

\u201cI wasn\u2019t a good athlete, so maybe it was some young male thing of\u00a0\u2018This is the physical feat I can do. Three Vicodin and a tequila and I\u2019m still standing,’\u201d he said.\u00a0\u201c<\/em>Who\u2019s the athlete now?\u201d<\/p>\n

When Mulaney was a teenager, his parents sent him to a psychiatrist, who told him that he was one part nice kid, one part \u201cgorilla that wants to kill the other half.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mulaney recently joined\u00a0NBC\u2019s \u201cLate Night With Seth Meyers\u201d\u00a0as a staff writer and performer, guest starring on the show too. He and Meyers previously worked together when Meyers was a head writer for \u201cSNL.\u201d He told Kimmel that his psychiatrist suggested the new gig because Mulaney needed structure.<\/p>\n

\u201cI cannot stress enough how grateful I am for the job,\u201d Mulaney said. \u201cRather than [Seth Meyers] saying to me, \u2018John, you\u2019re clearly going through something, but your jokes are terrible,\u2019 he\u2019s given me a couple segments to come on and do what I wrote, and those have been really, really fun.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
