The Israeli embassy in New Delhi was on high alert because of \u201cthreats\u201d it had received, even before a\u00a0small bomb went off outside the mission, its ambassador told\u00a0AFP<\/em>\u00a0on Saturday.<\/p>\n

The envoy, Ron Malka, said he was not surprised by Friday’s attack, which caused no injuries but blew the windows out of three cars.<\/p>\n

The road outside the embassy remained sealed off on Saturday as forensic experts sought clues as to who was responsible for what Israeli officials in Jerusalem have said was terrorism.<\/p>\n

Indian police have so far only described it as \u201ca mischievous attempt to create a sensation\u201d.<\/p>\n

\"israeli-embassy-in-delhi-on-high-alert-before-bomb-blast-ambassador-rapid-news-rapidnews\"\u201cThis could have ended differently in other circumstances, so we were fortunate,\u201d Malka said in a telephone interview.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are always prepared. Especially these last days, we raised the level of alert due to some threats,\u201d he added, without giving further details. \u201cWe are not surprised.\u201d<\/p>\n

Indian media reports said investigators had found an envelope with a letter addressed to the Israeli ambassador in the street.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Indian Express<\/em>\u00a0newspaper reported that the letter described the low-intensity explosion as a \u201ctrailer\u201d and made references to \u201cIranian martyrs\u201d Qasem Soleimani and Mohsen Fakhrizadeh.<\/p>\n

Soleimani, considered Iran’s most powerful military commander, was killed in a\u00a0US drone strike\u00a0in January 2020.<\/p>\n

Fakhrizadeh, one of the country’s top nuclear scientists, was\u00a0killed in November\u00a0\u2014 an assassination for which Iran blamed Israel.<\/p>\n

In 2012, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu blamed Iran for a bomb attack on an Israeli diplomatic car in Delhi that injured at least three people.<\/p>\n

Asked whether there was an Iranian link this time, Malka said: \u201cThose non-state actors that are striving for destablisation in the region and the world don’t like what is happening between Israel and India, that are striving for stability and peace.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt might be a threat for them.\u201d<\/p>\n

The device exploded as India and Israel marked the 29th anniversary of their diplomatic relations, and Malka said the timing was part of the investigation.<\/p>\n

India’s foreign minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar spoke to his Israeli counterpart Gabi Ashkenazi after the incident.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe take this very seriously,\u201d Jaishankar said. \u201cNo effort will be spared to find the culprits.\u201d<\/p>\n

The national security advisors of both countries have also held discussions.<\/p>\n

Since establishing relations, India and Israel have become close and India is now one of the biggest buyers of Israeli weapons and defence equipment.<\/p>\n

India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Israel in 2017, and Netanyahu made a return visit a year later.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
