Celebrated Urdu critic Shamsur Rehman Faruqi, who began his literary journey by waiting for many an editor\u2019s rejection slip and discovered his early success printed on a grocer\u2019s paper bag, succumbed to complications from coronavirus on Friday, a month after apparently recovering from it. He was 85.<\/p>\n
“He had been insisting to go back to his home in Allahabad. We reached here only this morning and within half an hour he passed away at around 11,” Faruqi’s nephew and writer Mahmood Farooqui told a private source.<\/p>\n
The Padma Shri poet was discharged from a hospital in Delhi on November 23 after recovering from coronavirus.<\/p>\n
“But due to steroids, he developed a fungal infection, mycosis, which further worsened his condition,” Farooqui added.<\/p>\n
Faruqi’s last rites will be performed at Ashok Nagar cemetery in Allahabad at 6 pm on Friday.<\/p>\n
Born on September 30, 1935, in Uttar Pradesh, Faruqi is credited to have revived \u2018Dastangoi\u2019, a 16th century Urdu oral storytelling art form.<\/p>\n
His books \u2018Mirror of Beauty\u2019 (translated into English from the Urdu \u2018Kai Chaand The Sar-e-Aasmaan\u2019 in 2006), \u2018Ghalib Afsaney Ki Himayat Mein\u2019 (1989) and \u2018The Sun That Rose From The Earth\u2019 (2014) are among others he wrote in his five-decade-long literary career.<\/p>\n
He also received Saraswati Samman in 1996 for his work \u2018She\u2019r-e Shor-Angez\u2019, a four-volume study of the eighteenth-century poet Mir Taqi Mir.<\/p>\n
Writer William Dalrymple took to Twitter to mourn the demise of Faruqi.<\/p>\n
“RIP, Janab Shamsur Rahman Faruqi saheb, one of the last great Padshahs of the Urdu literary world. This is such sad news,” Dalrymple said.<\/p>\n
