The 78th Annual Golden Globe Awards, which kick off a pandemic-era Hollywood awards season, are due to be handed out at a ceremony on Feb 28, hosted by actors Tina Fey and Amy Poehler. And for the first time, the event \u2014 typically a bubbly dinner gathering with flowing drinks \u2014 will be held bi-coastally.<\/p>\n
Mank<\/em>, the film about\u00a0Citizen Kane<\/em> co-writer Herman Mankiewicz, landed nominations for best film, drama; best actor for Gary Oldman; best director for Fincher, best supporting actress for Amanda Seyfried; best score; and best screenplay for Jack Fincher, the director\u2019s father who penned the script before dying in 2003.<\/p>\n Aaron Sorkin\u2019s\u00a0The Trial of the Chicago 7<\/em>\u00a0\u2014 which, like\u00a0Mank<\/em>, is a Netflix release \u2014 came closest with five nominations, including nods for best film, drama; best director and best screenplay for Sorkin; supporting actor for Sacha Baron Cohen; and best song.<\/p>\n The other nominees for best film in the drama category were Chloe Zhao\u2019s\u00a0Nomadland<\/em>, Emerald Fennell\u2019s\u00a0Promising Young Woman<\/em>\u00a0and Florian Zeller\u2019s\u00a0The Father<\/em>.<\/p>\n A year after fielding no female nominees for best director \u2014 or best feature film nomination for any movie directed by a woman \u2014 the Hollywood Foreign Press nominated more female filmmakers than it had before.<\/p>\n Regina King (One Night in Miami<\/em>), Zhao and Fennell were nominated for best director, alongside Sorkin and Fincher.<\/p>\n Netflix, which topped all studios at the Globes last year, too, led with a commanding 42 nominations, with 22 coming in film categories and 20 in television.<\/p>\n The nominees for best musical or comedy film are\u00a0Borat Subsequent Moviefilm<\/em>,\u00a0Hamilton<\/em>,\u00a0Music<\/em>,\u00a0Palm Springs<\/em>, and\u00a0The Prom<\/em>.<\/p>\n The nominees for best television series, drama, are\u00a0The Crown<\/em>,\u00a0Lovecraft Country<\/em>,\u00a0The Mandalorian<\/em>,\u00a0Ozark<\/em>, and\u00a0Ratched<\/em>.<\/p>\n The nominees for best television series, musical or comedy, are\u00a0Schitt\u2019s Creek<\/em>,\u00a0Ted Lasso<\/em>,\u00a0The Great<\/em>,\u00a0The Flight Attendant<\/em>, and\u00a0Emily in Paris<\/em>.<\/p>\n The nominees for lead actor in a drama film are Riz Ahmed,\u00a0Sound of Metal<\/em>; Chadwick Boseman,\u00a0Ma Rainey\u2019s Black Bottom<\/em>; Anthony Hopkins,\u00a0The Father<\/em>; Gary Oldman,\u00a0Mank<\/em>; and Tahar Rahim,\u00a0The Mauritanian<\/em>.<\/p>\n The nominees for actress in a drama film are Frances McDormand,\u00a0Nomadland<\/em>; Viola Davis,\u00a0Ma Rainey\u2019s Black Bottom<\/em>; Carey Mulligan,\u00a0Promising Young Woman<\/em>; Vanessa Kirby,\u00a0Pieces of a Woman<\/em>; Andra Day,\u00a0The United States vs. Billie Holiday<\/em>.<\/p>\n The nominees for lead actor in a comedy or musical film are Sacha Baron Cohen,\u00a0Borat Subsequent Moviefilm<\/em>; James Corden,\u00a0The Prom<\/em>; Andy Samberg,\u00a0Palm Springs<\/em>; Lin-Manuel Miranda,\u00a0Hamilton<\/em>; and Dev Patel,\u00a0The Personal History of David Copperfield<\/em>.<\/p>\n The nominees for lead actress in a comedy or musical film are Maria Bakalova,\u00a0Borat Subsequent Moviefilm<\/em>; Michelle Pfeiffer,\u00a0French Exit<\/em>; Anya Taylor-Joy,\u00a0Emma<\/em>; Kate Hudson,\u00a0Music<\/em>; Rosamund Pike,\u00a0I Care A Lot<\/em>.<\/p>\n Sarah Jessica Parker and Taraji P. Henson hosted the nominations announcement on Wednesday morning.<\/p>\n The Globes are typically the first major show of Hollywood\u2019s awards season, which ends with the crowning of the best picture winner at the Oscars. They\u2019ll retain that distinction, despite being delayed nearly two months, after a surge in virus cases in recent months pushed the Grammy Awards to March.<\/p>\n Last year\u2019s Golden Globes culminated in awards for\u00a01917<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood<\/em>.
