The French minister for higher education has sparked a backlash from university heads after warning about the spread of \u201cIslamo-leftism\u201d in the country\u2019s academic institutions.<\/p>\n

The term \u201cIslamo-leftism\u201d is often used in France by far-right politicians to discredit left-wing opponents they accuse of being blind to the dangers of what they term \u201cIslamist extremism\u201d and overly worried about racism and identity.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think that Islamo-leftism is eating away at our society as a whole, and universities are not immune and are part of our society,\u201d Minister for Higher Education Frederique Vidal told CNews television on Sunday.<\/p>\n

The comments came amid a divisive debate in France about what President Emmanuel Macron has called \u201cIslamist separatism\u201d, in which some are said to be flouting French laws in closed-off Muslim communities and fuelling attacks on French soil.<\/p>\n

The lower house of parliament approved a tough draft law on Tuesday that will extend the state\u2019s powers to shut down religious groups judged to be \u201cextremist\u201d.<\/p>\n

Macron has recently been accused by critics of pandering to the far right ahead of presidential elections next year, which polls show are likely to be a rerun of his 2017 duel with Marine Le Pen, leader of the anti-immigration National Rally.<\/p>\n

Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin caused unease inside the governing centrist party last Thursday after accusing Le Pen of \u201csoftness\u201d on Islam during a televised debate.<\/p>\n

In response to Vidal\u2019s comments, the Conference of University Presidents (CPU) issued a statement on Tuesday expressing \u201cits shock at another sterile controversy over the issue of \u2018Islamo-leftism\u2019 at university.\u201d<\/p>\n

Last October, Education Minister Jean-Michel Blanquer had also warned that \u201cIslamo-leftism\u201d was \u201cwreaking havoc\u201d in French academia.<\/p>\n

The CPU group, which represents the heads of French universities, condemned the use of the ill-defined label which it said should be left to the far right \u201cwhich popularised it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Focus on race<\/h2>\n

Vidal also announced that she would order an investigation into the problem of researchers \u201clooking at everything through the prism of wanting to fracture and divide\u201d, which she said included those focused on colonialism and race.<\/p>\n

But the National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS), the research body Vidal charged with the study, has already hit back.<\/p>\n

Although it agreed to carry out the investigation, the CNRS condemned \u201cattempts to delegitimise different fields of research such as post-colonial studies\u201d.<\/p>\n

Asked to comment further in Parliament on Tuesday, Vidal said the investigation would determine \u201cwhat is academic research and what is activism and opinion\u201d.<\/p>\n

Government spokesman Gabriel Attal appeared to distance himself from the idea on Wednesday when asked for Macron\u2019s views on the issue at a news briefing.<\/p>\n

The president has an \u201cabsolute commitment to the independence of academic researchers\u201d, Attal said, adding that it was \u201ca fundamental guarantee of our republic\u201d.<\/p>\n

Movements against racism over the last year such as Black Lives Matter, which resonated in France after arriving from the US, have led some to argue that the country is importing American racial and identity politics sometimes derided as \u201cwoke culture\u201d.<\/p>\n

A new generation of younger French activists is also increasingly vocal about the problem of racism in France and the legacy of the country\u2019s colonial past in Africa and the Middle East.<\/p>\n

Both Macron and Education Minister Blanquer have spoken out about the danger of focusing on race and discrimination, which they see as fostering divisions between communities and undermining France\u2019s founding ideal of a united society.<\/p>\n

Mame-Fatou Niang, a Black academic who studies race and identity in France, condemned Vidal\u2019s proposed investigation, saying it would put those studying colonialism and racism under unfair scrutiny.<\/p>\n

Writing on Twitter, she said that \u201cminority researchers have been regarded as activists through the ages\u201d.<\/p>\n

But Vidal\u2019s announcement was well received by right-wing politicians who share her concerns.<\/p>\n

Several MPs from the right-wing Republicans party had demanded in November a parliamentary investigation into what they termed \u201cideological intellectual excesses in universities\u201d.<\/p>\n

Some French academics have also formed an \u201cObservatory on De-colonialism and Identity Ideologies\u201d to fight back against what they view as an unhealthy focus on race, identity and colonial history in academia.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
