{"id":4948,"date":"2021-02-20T10:38:06","date_gmt":"2021-02-20T10:38:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dailyrapidnews.com\/eng\/?p=4948"},"modified":"2021-02-20T10:38:06","modified_gmt":"2021-02-20T10:38:06","slug":"researchers-exchange-messages-with-dreamers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dailyrapidnews.com\/eng\/2021\/02\/20\/researchers-exchange-messages-with-dreamers\/","title":{"rendered":"Researchers Exchange Messages with Dreamers"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"sc-pmiWo kpsQZZ\">\n<p>A new study has suggested that it is possible to communicate people through their\u00a0dreams, able to understand questions and reply with cogent answers.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"sc-pmiWo kpsQZZ\">\n<p>\u201cWe found that individuals in REM sleep can interact with an experimenter and engage in real-time communication,\u201d senior author Ken Paller of\u00a0Northwestern University\u00a0said in a\u00a0statement. \u201cWe also showed that dreamers are capable of comprehending questions, engaging in working-memory operations, and producing answers.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Our new paper just dropped open access: Real-time dialogue between experimenters and dreamers during REM sleep <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/DxByWMlMgl\">https:\/\/t.co\/DxByWMlMgl<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Ken Paller (@kap101) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/kap101\/status\/1362426984605843459?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 18, 2021<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"article-im-prompt\">\u201cMost people might predict that this would not be possible&#8211;that people would either wake up when asked a question or fail to answer, and certainly not comprehend a question without misconstruing it,\u201d he added.<\/div>\n<div class=\"sc-pmiWo kpsQZZ\">\n<p>The researchers attempted communications with 36 subjects who were lucid dreaming &#8211; during which the sleeping person is aware they are having a dream &#8211; across the US, France, Germany, and the Netherlands. Some participants were adept lucid dreamers, while others had never done it before.<\/p>\n<div class=\"sc-pmiWo kpsQZZ\">\n<p>They found that it was possible for people who were dreaming to follow instructions, do basic mathematics, answer yes-or-no questions, and tell various other sensory inputs apart.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"sc-pmiWo kpsQZZ\">\n<p>In lieu of responding verbally, the subjects\u2019 answers could be gleaned from eye movements or facial muscles.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"sc-pmiWo kpsQZZ\">\n<p>Out of 158 questions, the dreamers responded correctly 18.6% of the time according to the report in\u00a0<em>Current Biology<\/em>. The way these questions manifested were different for different people.<\/p>\n<div class=\"sc-pmiWo kpsQZZ\">\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4950\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Some recalled the questions as part of the dream; another heard maths questions from a car radio, while yet another heard the researcher interrupting the dream asking if he spoke Spanish,\u00a0<em>Science\u00a0<\/em>reports.<\/p>\n<div class=\"sc-pmiWo kpsQZZ\">\n<p>\u201cWe put the results together because we felt that the combination of results from four different labs using different approaches most convincingly attests to the reality of this phenomenon of two-way communication,\u201d Karen Konkoly, a PhD student at Northwestern University and first author of the paper, said.<\/p>\n<div class=\"sc-pmiWo kpsQZZ\">\n<p>She added that future studies of dreaming could sue these methods to parse someone\u2019s brain activity when they were asleep compared to when they were awake.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"sc-pmiWo kpsQZZ\">\n<p>This would help verify post-dream reports, such as\u00a0machines that can stimulate sleepers into having certain dreams.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"sc-pmiWo kpsQZZ\">\n<p>For everyday people, these methods could also be used to help those with sleep difficulties or suffering from nightmares.<\/p>\n<div id=\"main\" class=\"sc-qQIyP jkleoa\">\n<div class=\"sc-pmiWo kpsQZZ\">\n<p>\u201cThis work challenges the foundational definitions of sleep,\u201d\u00a0cognitive neuroscientist Benjamin Baird of the University of Wisconsin told\u00a0<em>Science<\/em>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"sc-pmiWo kpsQZZ\">\n<p>\u201cIt is proof of concept, and the fact that different labs used all these different ways to prove it is possible to have this kind of two-way communication \u2026 makes it stronger.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"sc-pZAOG kcDaeR\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div
