With spotty wifi, lagging sound and Zoom chaos, the 78th Golden Globes was a half-virtual ceremony\u00a0once again dominated by British stars but marred by technical difficulties and renewed scrutiny on the awards\u2019 lack of diversity.<\/p>\n

A year after Phoebe Waller-Bridge\u2019s Fleabag and Sam Mendes\u2019 1917 led a near British-invasion of the Globes, Netflix\u2019s prestige royal family drama\u00a0The Crown\u00a0won for best television drama series along with a sweep of acting prizes for its Prince Charles (Josh O\u2019Connor), Princess Diana (Emma Corrin) and Margaret Thatcher (Gillian Anderson).<\/p>\n

The night kicked off with wins for two black British stars as best supporting actors in film and TV \u2013\u00a0Daniel Kaluuya\u00a0in Judas and the Black Messiah, and John Boyega in Steve McQueen\u2019s Small Axe \u2014 two victories which highlighted the night\u2019s animating tech and diversity struggles. Kaluuya\u2019s speech was nearly abandoned because of mic issues (\u201cYou\u2019re doing me dirty!\u201d he said as the Globes cut away, then cut back), while Boyega\u2019s excitement was filtered through glitchy sound.<\/p>\n

The wins also underscored mounting outrage over the Golden Globes\u2019 governing body, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), following two Los Angeles Times investigations into the insular organization\u2019s\u00a0lack of diversity\u00a0\u2013 the 87-member group includes no black members \u2013 and\u00a0allegations\u00a0of ethical lapses, self-dealing and financial impropriety.<\/p>\n

The evening marked another triumphant year for\u00a0Netflix\u00a0\u2013 The Queen\u2019s Gambit, the streamer\u2019s most-watched miniseries to date, took home the top prize for limited series and netted star Anya Taylor-Joy her first Golden Globe. No program was as omnipresent as The Crown, which picked up three more awards, bringing its Globe total to six.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou have taught me compassion and empathy beyond any measure,\u201d said Corrin in her speech, thanking the real Princess Diana. O\u2019Connor, meanwhile, urged audiences to \u201call collectively put mental health at the forefront of our minds\u201d.<\/p>\n

On the comedy side, the final season of Schitt\u2019s Creek rode its wave of\u00a0Emmys dominance\u00a0to wins for best series and best actress for Catherine O\u2019Hara.<\/p>\n

Baron Cohen took home the top comedy film prizes for Borat Subsequent Moviefilm, his sequel to the hit 2006 comedy about an outlandish Kazakh journalist traveling the US which generated headlines for a queasy, controversial bedroom scene involving Donald Trump\u2019s personal lawyer Rudy Giuliani. \u201cDonald Trump is contesting the results \u2026 he\u2019s claiming that a lot of dead people voted, which is a very rude thing to say about the HFPA,\u201d joked Baron Cohen in his best actor speech.<\/p>\n

For the first time in\u00a0Golden Globes\u00a0history, the majority of best director nominations were women \u2013 Emerald Fennell for Promising Young Woman, Regina King for One Night in Miami and winner Chlo\u00e9 Zhao for Nomadland.<\/p>\n

Nomadland, a generous, observational film on elder Americans displaced by the Recession to mobile homes on the road, also triumphed as best drama film, a significant win for a director whose first two films were independent, fervently non-commercial projects.<\/p>\n

\u201cNomadland at its core for me is a pilgrimage through grief and healing,\u201d said Zhao, accepting, like all the other stars, from a living room on Zoom. \u201cSo for everyone who has gone through this difficult journey at some point in their lives, this is for you.\u201d<\/p>\n

Best actor in a drama went to the late\u00a0Chadwick Boseman, whose death in August at age 43 from colon cancer shocked the industry, for his final on-screen role in Netflix\u2019s Ma Rainey\u2019s Black Bottom. In an emotional speech, his wife, Taylor Simone Ledward, said the Black Panther star would \u201csay something beautiful, something inspiring, something that would amplify that little voice inside all of us that tells you you can, that tells you to keep going\u201d.<\/p>\n

There were also major wins for\u00a0Rosamund Pike\u00a0as best actress in a comedy for I Care A Lot and Andra Day as best actress in a drama for The United States vs Billie Holliday.<\/p>\n

The report that the HFPA \u2013 whose event marks the beginning of Hollywood\u2019s awards season and holds outsize clout in the industry \u2013 does not have a single black member drew widespread criticism prior to the ceremony, particularly in light of snubs for black-led television series (I May Destroy You) and ensemble films (Spike Lee\u2019s Da 5 Bloods, Ma Rainey\u2019s Black Bottom, and One Night in Miami). Several industry stars including Ava DuVernay, Shonda Rhimes, Amy Schumer, Sterling K Brown and Judd Apatow tweeted\u00a0condemnations\u00a0under the hashtag #TimesUpGlobes with a graphic from Time\u2019s Up, the Hollywood organization formed in the wake of #MeToo, calling for reform of the HFPA.<\/p>\n

The tension did not go unmentioned by the night\u2019s emcees, comedians Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, who returned for their fourth go-round following a stretch in 2013-15. Standing side-by-side on a split screen across the country (Fey in New York, Poehler in Los Angeles) the duo addressed rooms filled (according to Covid safety protocols) with essential workers and health professionals instead of the usual megawatt celebrities.<\/p>\n

The two took their usual lighthearted jabs at award show pageantry and the false hierarchy of film versus television, before acknowledging the HFPA controversy. \u201cEverybody is understandably upset at the HFPA and their choices,\u201d said Poehler. \u201cLook a lot of trashy garbage got nominated, but that happens, OK? That\u2019s like their thing. But a number of black actors and black-led projects were overlooked.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe all know that award shows are stupid,\u201d said Fey, but \u201ceven with stupid things, inclusivity is important\u201d. On the lack of any black members, Fey spoke to the HFPA directly: \u201cMaybe you guys didn\u2019t get the memo because your workplace is the back booth of a French McDonald\u2019s, but you\u2019ve got to change that.\u201d<\/p>\n

HFPA leadership also briefly addressed the criticism onstage. \u201cWe have our own work to do \u2026 we must have black journalists in our organization,\u201d said a German member. Another echoed the association\u2019s\u00a0statement\u00a0to the Times earlier this week and said the association looked forward \u201cto a more inclusive future\u201d.<\/p>\n

Criticism of the HFPA\u2019s lack of diversity coursed throughout the evening, from comedic jabs (\u201cThank you to the all-white Hollywood Foreign Press,\u201d said Sacha Baron Cohen, accepting for best film comedy Borat Subsequent Moviefilm) to earnest calls for reform. Actor, activist, and Hollywood legacy legend\u00a0Jane Fonda\u00a0accepted the Cecil B DeMille award for lifetime achievement with a pointed call to industry leaders to support diverse storytelling.<\/p>\n

\u201c[There\u2019s] a story we\u2019ve been afraid to see and hear about ourselves in this industry,\u201d she said. \u201cA story about which voices we respect and elevate and which we tune out, a story about who\u2019s offered a seat at the table and who\u2019s kept out of the rooms where decisions are made.<\/p>\n

Fonda called on Hollywood, \u201cincluding the groups that decide who gets hired and what gets made and who wins awards,\u201d to be leaders and \u201cmake an effort to expand that tent so everyone rises and everyone\u2019s story has a chance to be seen and heard.\u201d<\/p>\n

Time\u2019s Up\u2019s president and CEO, Tina Tchen, responded quickly to the ceremony. \u201cThe HFPA\u2019s statements tonight and over the last several days indicate a fundamental lack of understanding of the depth of the problems at hand,\u201d she said in a letter. \u201cYour stated version of change is cosmetic \u2013 find black people. That is not a solution.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
