Still, it appears the virus led to him being admitted to Children&#8217;s Healthcare of Atlanta with serious health issues. For the past month, Pool Jr. has been in the hospital battling\u00a0multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children, or MIS-C.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article__section article__section_type_text utility__text\">\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6398\" src=\"https:\/\/dailyrapidnews.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/COVID-reaction-in-child-nearly-shut-down-organs-rapidnews.jpg\" alt=\"COVID-reaction-in-child-nearly-shut-down-organs-rapidnews\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1080\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dailyrapidnews.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/COVID-reaction-in-child-nearly-shut-down-organs-rapidnews.jpg 1920w, https:\/\/dailyrapidnews.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/COVID-reaction-in-child-nearly-shut-down-organs-rapidnews-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/dailyrapidnews.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/COVID-reaction-in-child-nearly-shut-down-organs-rapidnews-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/dailyrapidnews.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/COVID-reaction-in-child-nearly-shut-down-organs-rapidnews-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/dailyrapidnews.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/COVID-reaction-in-child-nearly-shut-down-organs-rapidnews-1536x864.jpg 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1920px) 100vw, 1920px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Cardiologist told me my son was in like the top three percent in the country&#8230;top three percent of worst cases of MIS-C they&#8217;ve ever seen,&#8221; said Quincy Pool Sr.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article__section article__section_type_text utility__text\">\n<p>The serious case of the rare condition attacked the boy&#8217;s heart, lungs, kidney and caused a blood clot, according to his father.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article__section article__section_type_text utility__text\">\n<p>&#8220;He was on the brink of organ shutdown,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article__section article__section_type_text utility__text\">\n<p>Swelling in the boy&#8217;s arms required surgery to relieve and now the 4-year-old is needing to learn how to use his hands again but he is starting to show signs of improvement.<br \/>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/-q6z3dtQsBY\" width=\"789\" height=\"444\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article__section article__section_type_text utility__text\">\n<p>&#8220;He is walking, getting out of the wheelchair,&#8221; Pool Sr. said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article__section article__section_type_text utility__text\">\n<p>The boy&#8217;s father added no one in their family ever tested positive for COVID-19 and never experienced any symptoms. But when his son did become sick and they went to the hospital, doctors found he had COVID antibodies, meaning his son was exposed at some point to the virus.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article__section article__section_type_text utility__text\">\n<p>&#8220;We are still trying to get a better understanding of which children are more likely to be predisposed to having MIS-C,&#8221; said\u00a0Dr. Andi Shane with Children&#8217;s Healthcare of Atlanta.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article__section article__section_type_text utility__text\">\n<p>Shane is the medical director of hospital epidemiology and division chief of pediatric infectious diseases at Emory University. When COVID-19 cases overall have spiked, Shane said her staff has then seen MIS-C cases increase weeks later. Last May Children&#8217;s doctors began diagnosing the rare condition and since then have seen approximately 240 cases.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article__section article__section_type_text utility__text\">\n<p>&#8220;What usually happens is most children get COVID and then the MIS-C symptoms start to present three weeks to six weeks after the initial COVID infection,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article__section article__section_type_text utility__text\">\n<p>Less severe symptoms of MIS-C include fever, abdominal pain, vomiting, rash, bloodshot eyes. For those symptoms,\u00a0the CDC recommends\u00a0calling your child&#8217;s pediatrician. More serious symptoms can include trouble breathing, prolonged chest pain, confusion, being unable to stay awake, serious stomach pain. Those symptoms are rare but immediate medical attention is advised.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article__section article__section_type_text utility__text\">\n<p>&#8220;We have seen a trend towards less severe conditions or less severe presentation,&#8221; Dr. Shane said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article__section article__section_type_text utility__text\">\n<p>She added that less severe cases may only require a short hospital stay and minimal treatment.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article__section article__section_type_text utility__text\">\n<p>Pool Sr. though said in his son&#8217;s serious case, after a month in the hospital, he is being told they may be in the hospital for another three weeks with rehab to follow after he is released.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article__section article__section_type_text utility__text\">\n<p>&#8220;MIS-C is a real thing, the virus is a real thing but the best approach is to try to attempt to keep awareness,&#8221; Pool Sr. said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article__section article__section_type_text utility__text\">\n<p>The easiest way to avoid MIS-C according to Shane is to avoid COVID-19. While adults are now being vaccinated for the virus, the vaccine hasn&#8217;t yet been authorized for children. Until that time, Shane said to protect children, health precautions used throughout the pandemic need to continue to be followed.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article__section article__section_type_text utility__text\">\n<p>&#8220;Families should continue to practice all of the mitigation efforts that they have been so far,&#8221; Shane said. &#8220;Of course the weather is getting nice and people want to go outside and travel.
