Independently,\u00a0Paul Baran\u00a0proposed a distributed network based on data in message blocks in the early 1960s and\u00a0Donald Davies\u00a0conceived of\u00a0packet switching\u00a0in 1965 at the\u00a0National Physical Laboratory\u00a0(NPL) and proposed building a national commercial data network in the UK.<\/p>\n<p><sup id=\"cite_ref-5\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-6\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>The\u00a0Advanced Research Projects Agency\u00a0(ARPA) of the\u00a0U.S. Department of Defense\u00a0awarded contracts in 1969 for the development of the\u00a0ARPANET\u00a0project, directed by\u00a0Robert Taylor\u00a0and managed by\u00a0Lawrence Roberts. ARPANET adopted the packet switching technology proposed by Davies and Baran,<sup id=\"cite_ref-7\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>\u00a0underpinned by mathematical work in the early 1970s by\u00a0Leonard Kleinrock\u00a0at\u00a0UCLA. The network was built by\u00a0Bolt, Beranek, and Newman.<sup id=\"cite_ref-:1_8-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The\u00a0history of
