But some, according to a new study, will become extremely active, growing to new sizes for several hours after death.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s morbid to think about your brain becoming\u00a0<em>more\u00a0<\/em>active after you\u2019re gone, but the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) researchers behind the discovery\u00a0stressed in a press release\u00a0that it doesn\u2019t mean people are conscious or that the so-called \u201czombie genes\u201d that trigger this neural activity could do anything as dramatic as reawakening the dead.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-7288\" src=\"https:\/\/dailyrapidnews.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/After-You-Die-Some-Cells-in-Your-Brain-Become-More-Active-rapidnews.jpg\" alt=\"After-You-Die-Some-Cells-in-Your-Brain-Become-More-Active-rapidnews\" width=\"1200\" height=\"630\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dailyrapidnews.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/After-You-Die-Some-Cells-in-Your-Brain-Become-More-Active-rapidnews.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/dailyrapidnews.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/After-You-Die-Some-Cells-in-Your-Brain-Become-More-Active-rapidnews-300x158.jpg 300w, https:\/\/dailyrapidnews.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/After-You-Die-Some-Cells-in-Your-Brain-Become-More-Active-rapidnews-1024x538.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/dailyrapidnews.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/After-You-Die-Some-Cells-in-Your-Brain-Become-More-Active-rapidnews-768x403.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Instead,\u00a0the study, which was published Tuesday in the journal\u00a0<em>Nature Scientific Reports<\/em>, has major implications for the way neuroscientists study the brain \u2014 especially when those studies rely on human tissue samples.<\/p>\n<p>Specifically, the team found that glial cells \u2014 which aren\u2019t directly linked to neural activity but provide a support system for the brain \u2014 activated, swelled up, and even grew new appendages right as the other cells around them died off.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat glial cells enlarge after death isn\u2019t too surprising given that they are inflammatory and their job is to clean things up after brain injuries like oxygen deprivation or stroke,\u201d study coauthor Dr. Jeffrey Loeb, head of neurology and rehabilitation at the UIC College of Medicine, said in the press release.<\/p>\n<p>That poses a bit of a problem for the field, because much of the research that scientists have done on neurological conditions like brain injuries or Alzheimer\u2019s Disease is conducted on brain tissue\u00a0collected after death\u00a0or surgery, and operates under the assumption that brain cells simply die off like any other, Loeb added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur findings don\u2019t mean that we should throw away human tissue research programs, it just means that researchers need to take into account these genetic and cellular changes, and reduce the post-mortem interval as much as possible to reduce the magnitude of these changes,\u201d Loeb said in the release. \u201cThe good news from our findings is that we now know which genes and cell types are stable, which degrade, and which increase over time so that results from postmortem brain studies can be better understood.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When you die, most of the cells in your brain will gradually flicker out.
