On January 2, 2021, the Earth reached a distance of about 147,093,162 kilometers from the Sun, or 0.98 astronomical unit (AU). This means that the planet is 3% closer to the star than the average, that is, it is receiving more solar radiation. Likewise, the sun will also look bigger during the days.<\/p>\n

This phenomenon is called perihelion, that is, the point at which the Earth\u2019s orbit is closest to the Sun.<\/p>\n

It depends on whether someone is in the hemisphere, but the underlying cause may change depending on where we are in the universe.<\/p>\n

Temperature, climate and weather are not determined by our proximity to the Sun, but solely by the tilt of rotation of the Earth\u2019s axis. For example, in January, the Northern Hemisphere is tilted away from the Sun, while the Southern Hemisphere is tilted.\u00a0To our star.<\/p>\n

In other words, Earth is roughly 3 million miles (5 million km) closer to the sun in early January than it is in early July. That\u2019s always the case. Earth is closest to the sun every year in early January, when it\u2019s winter for the Northern Hemisphere.<\/p>\n
