We hope to be able to make some announcement on that\u00a0in the coming months.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The SBP governor told the host that for now, they\u00a0have allowed a framework for digital\u00a0banks to begin\u00a0their operations\u00a0in Pakistan. These are the\u00a0banks, which\u00a0don\u2019t have a\u00a0brick and mortar presence and\u00a0are purely digital like challenger banks or neo banks.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/CBDC?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#CBDC<\/a>, Central Bank Digital Currency in Pakistan?<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are studying it,&#8221; says Reza Baqir, Governor <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/StateBank_Pak?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@StateBank_Pak<\/a> citing financial inclusion, tackling money laundering and counterterrorism as possible benefits.<\/p>\n<p>\/ PART 2 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/bY6DFOtGPe\">pic.twitter.com\/bY6DFOtGPe<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Julia Chatterley (@jchatterleyCNN) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jchatterleyCNN\/status\/1380212617436925955?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 8, 2021<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>The SBP governor said they are\u00a0studying it (SBP\u2019s own digital currency) as\u00a0some countries such as China are already showing the way it\u00a0benefits central banks.<\/p>\n<p>It will\u00a0not only\u00a0boost the central bank\u00a0efforts for\u00a0financial inclusion but also\u00a0allow it to make progress in its\u00a0fight towards anti-money laundering and\u00a0countering terrorism\u00a0financing, he said.<\/p>\n<p>Baqir didn\u2019t share any details about the SBP\u2019s own digital currency, but he said Pakistan is open to digital innovation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStripe and other big payment providers are very welcome in\u00a0Pakistan. It\u2019s a market that\u2019s waiting to burst as far as digitization is concerned,\u201d the governor said while responding to a question on Fintechs. Explaining he said when the SBP eliminated\u00a0the IBFT fee in response to the Covid-19 pandemic, its impact was\u00a0phenomenal. \u201cFor the quarter that ended in\u00a0December, we had a\u00a0growth of about 150% to 200% compared to a year ago on mobile banking transactions. For internet banking transactions that number is\u00a0around a 100% to 150% growth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pakistan is a market that is\u00a0home to the fifth-largest concentration of people. They are young and\u00a0tech-savvy\u00a0that are very fertile for such digital innovation, he added.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this week, China created its own digital currency,\u00a0a cyber yuan, which is controlled by its central bank that will issue this virtual money. The fiat currency also has a digital version in the form of credit cards, payment apps, etc, but in this case, China is turning its legal tender into a computer code (think cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin and Ethereum).<\/p>\n<h2><strong>What is a digital-only currency?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>A digital-only currency\u00a0is in form of computer coders. There is no physical money or coins involved. A\u00a0person by the name of\u00a0Satoshi Nakamoto launched it in\u00a02008 without revealing his identity.<\/p>\n<p>Digital coins have become quite popular in the last decade or so as evident from the\u00a0phenomenal success of\u00a0the world\u2019s first cryptocurrency: Bitcoin, which is now worth $58,000 a unit, an increase of 750% over the past 12 months.\u00a0People who support the concept have called it \u201cbreakthrough technology\u201d that will change the way financial systems work.<\/p>\n<p>A cryptocurrency\u00a0is different from conventional digital currencies because\u00a0it bypasses intermediaries, usually a bank, and enables instant\u00a0peer-to-peer payments. Nakamoto launched it in\u00a0the wake of a financial crisis to give people control over their money and exclude banks or governments from the process.<\/p>\n<p>It works on blockchain technology\u2014a\u00a0decentralised model of ledger.\u00a0That is, no central bank or government can place any limit on its production or transfers. In a cryptocurrency, a\u00a0vast\u00a0network of computers validates all transactions by solving a complex mathematical\u00a0problem, making it impossible to counterfeit\u00a0a coin. That is it solves the problem of double-spending. These computers are called miners and whoever validates the transaction first gets a reward. That is new currency is added to the system without created inflation.<\/p>\n<p>Since Bitcoin\u2019s launch,\u00a0many other cryptocurrencies\u2014together known as AltCoins\u2014have been introduced and become a new asset class for investors. The combined market cap of all\u00a0cryptocurrencies\u00a0is around $2 trillion.<\/p>\n<p>The increasing popularity of cryptocurrencies has, however, become a concern for legacy banks and central\u00a0banks across the world because they\u00a0take control away from them and give it to the people. This money is not regulated and given the\u00a0anonymity\u00a0around, it can be used for tax evasion, money laundering, other criminal activities. To counter this, governments across the world are\u00a0exploring different options including regulating\u00a0cryptocurrencies\u00a0or even\u00a0launching\u00a0their own digital
