Queen Elizabeth II on Saturday\u00a0bid farewell to her late husband, Prince Philip, at a royal funeral like no other, restricted by coronavirus rules but reflecting his long life of military and public service.<\/p>\n

The Duke of Edinburgh, who died on April 9 at age 99, was interred in the Royal Vault at St George\u2019s Chapel at Windsor Castle after a 50-minute service attended by just 30 guests.<\/p>\n

The Queen, 94, seen for the first time since his death, cut a lone figure, sat in mourning black, with a white-trimmed, black face mask. Close family, also masked, sat socially distanced in the historic 15th-century Gothic chapel.<\/p>\n

Philip \u2014 described by royals as \u201cthe grandfather of the nation\u201d \u2014 was Britain\u2019s longest-serving royal consort and was married to the Queen for 73 years.<\/p>\n

He was an almost constant presence at her side during her record-breaking reign that began in 1952 as Britain rebuilt from World War II, and as its global empire began to unravel.<\/p>\n

His death, which the family said had left a \u201chuge void\u201d in the Queen\u2019s life, has robbed of her of the man she called her \u201cstrength and stay\u201d and closes a remarkable chapter for Britain\u2019s most famous family, and in the country\u2019s history.<\/p>\n

The last high-profile funeral of a senior royal was for the Queen\u2019s mother, who died in 2002, aged 101.<\/p>\n

But unlike then, when more than one million people thronged outside Westminster Abbey in central London to watch the sombre pageant, the public was noticeably absent from Saturday\u2019s ceremony.<\/p>\n

The coronavirus pandemic forced hasty revisions to the well-rehearsed plans for the duke\u2019s death, code-named \u201cOperation Forth Bridge\u201d, stripping back public elements to prevent large crowds from gathering.<\/p>\n

Government guidelines limited the number of mourners and a quartet performed hymns the duke chose himself in a barren nave stripped of seating.<\/p>\n

Mark of respect<\/h2>\n

The intimate, ceremonial funeral from behind the stately castle walls was broadcast live on television to millions across Britain and the world.<\/p>\n

A military gun was fired to signal a minute\u2019s silence when his coffin arrived at the chapel on a bespoke Land Rover he designed himself.<\/p>\n

The coffin was draped in his standard and topped by a wreath of white roses and lilies from the Queen as well as his naval cap and ceremonial sword.<\/p>\n

Across Britain \u2014 on the streets, in shops, railway stations and at sporting events \u2014 people bowed their heads with respect. Prime Minister Boris Johnson, dressed in black, observed the silence at his country retreat, Chequers.<\/p>\n

Flights in an out of nearby Heathrow Airport were stopped for the duration of the ceremony.<\/p>\n

Ieuan Jones, 37, travelled to Windsor from his home in the Welsh capital, Cardiff, and called Philip \u201ca strong man, a true hero (who) did so much for this country and the royal family\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s really a shame that because of the pandemic we can\u2019t pay a wider tribute to the exceptional man he was,\u201d he told AFP.<\/p>\n

Despite the restrictions, the stripped-down sendoff for the former Royal Navy commander still combined centuries of royal protocol with pomp, pageantry \u2014 and military precision.<\/p>\n

Members of the British armed forces, in formal dress, lined the procession route, heads bowed, as the cortege passed, as a minute gun rang out across the grounds and a bell tolled.<\/p>\n

Philip\u2019s grandsons William, 38, and Harry, 36, joined the procession, in their first public meeting since a reported falling out about Harry\u2019s shock move to California, and his stinging criticism of royal life, including racism in the family.<\/p>\n

Last Post<\/h2>\n

The pair, who as young boys walked behind the coffin of their mother, princess Diana, in 1997, were separated by their cousin, Anne\u2019s son Peter Phillips, 43.<\/p>\n

They were later seen chatting as they left the chapel with William\u2019s wife, Kate.<\/p>\n

The religious service was a simple affair, reflecting the wishes of the straight-talking duke, who was known for his aversion to \u201cfuss\u201d.<\/p>\n

In keeping with his wishes, there was no sermon, but the service reflected his love of the sea, and long association with the Royal Navy, including hymns and Bible readings.<\/p>\n

The Dean of Windsor, David Conner, paid tribute to his \u201ckindness, humour and humanity\u201d, and devotion to the Queen, who turns 95 next week and is in the twilight of her reign.<\/p>\n

The Queen, who had been escorted to the chapel by a lady-in-waiting in the royal Bentley, watched from the chapel choir as her husband\u2019s was lowered steadily into the Royal Vault by electric motor.<\/p>\n

The Pipe Major of the Royal Regiment of Scotland played a lament, and buglers of the Royal Marines sounded The Last Post.<\/p>\n

When the Queen dies, he will be transferred to lie alongside her in the King George VI memorial chapel, which houses the remains of her father, George VI, her mother, also called Elizabeth, and the ashes of her younger sister, Margaret.<\/p>\n

Lasting legacy<\/h2>\n

The striking image of the Queen sat alone with her thoughts dominated every British front page on Sunday.<\/p>\n

The Star on Sunday ran with the headline \u201cBless her\u201d, adding \u201cour Queen, truly alone for the first time in 73 years\u201d, while the Independent\u2019s cover read \u201cAlone in grief, the Queen says goodbye\u201d.<\/p>\n

The Sunday Express front page insisted \u201cYou\u2019re not alone Ma\u2019am\u201d, saying that the country shared in her grief.<\/p>\n

The funeral came after eight days of public mourning for the duke, which has seen the Union Jack flown at half-mast, and a virtual halt in official government business.<\/p>\n

It has also brought renewed focus on the central place of the royals in British life and culture, with the ageing Queen and Prince Philip symbolic of another age.<\/p>\n

At Buckingham Palace, the Queen\u2019s central London home, Cardiff-born chef Santosh Singh laid purple tulips to mark the end of an era.<\/p>\n

\u201cI love the royals. I think they\u2019re amazing\u2026 It\u2019s sad because in time, all this will change,\u201d the 57-year-old said.<\/p>\n

Pollsters YouGov in March found that while 63 percent of the public supported the monarchy, only 37 percent of those aged 18-24 wanted it to continue.<\/p>\n

Yet Prince Philip\u2019s death commanded a flood of tributes from across Britain and around the world, including from the remote Pacific island of Vanuatu, where he is revered as a god.<\/p>\n

One of his lasting legacies will be the Duke of Edinburgh\u2019s Award (DofE) scheme for young people, which was set up in 1956 and now operates in more than 140 countries worldwide.<\/p>\n

Some 6.7 million young people in the UK have taken part. His youngest son, Edward, Earl of Wessex, has assumed a greater role in the organisation, of which he is a trustee.<\/p>\n

He will become Duke of Edinburgh when the Queen dies.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
