Punjab to charge residents sanitation fee across province

In a significant move under its ongoing cleanliness initiative, the Punjab government has decided to impose sanitation fees across the province.

The charges, which range from Rs200 to Rs5,000, will vary by location and property type, and aim to support sustained waste management services.

Fee structure varies for rural and urban areas

The sanitation fee is being rolled out under the ‘Suthra Punjab’ campaign, which has been operational for the past eight months without any charges until now. According to the Local Government Department, separate rates will apply in urban and rural areas to reflect local economic and infrastructural differences.

  • Rural Areas:
    • Rs200 to Rs400 based on village size and household capacity.
  • Urban Residential Properties:
    • Houses under 5 marla: Rs300
    • 5 to 10 marla: Rs500
    • 10 marla: Rs1,000
    • 20 to 40 marla: Rs2,000
    • Over 40 marla: Rs5,000
  • Urban Commercial Properties:
    • Small businesses: Rs500
    • Medium businesses: Rs1,000
    • Large businesses: Rs3,000

Digital billing and payment system to be introduced

To modernize the process, the billing system will be digitalized. Initially, paper bills will be issued every two months to allow citizens to adapt to the new structure. Over time, a fully digital billing process is expected.
