A British woman murdered in Pakistan was allegedly ignored by police three times when she complained about being harassed.
Mayra Zulfiqar, 26, was reportedly shot and strangled in her apartment in Lahore, Pakistan, on Monday.
It is now claimed she complained to police three times in the run up to her death, alleging a man called Saad Ameer Butt had threatened her.
She told officers that she feared for her life after Butt warned of ‘dire consequences’ if she did not marry him, the Independent Urdu reports.
Butt is one of two men already arrested by police, who are also searching for two more suspects.
It was previously reported that officers were searching for two men who had pressured her to marry them.
But a family source told the Daily Mail: “There were not two men who were after Mayra’s hand, that’s just not true.
“It was one man who was harassing her, and we don’t know why. Perhaps it was because she’s from the UK and is a very beautiful girl. It might have been a status thing for him.”
The source added that a local gangster connected to the local police had ‘taken a shine’ to Miss Zulfiqar.
She reported him to the police for harassment, however officers failed to do anything, the source said.
Butt had allegedly been harassing Miss Zulfiqar for some time, despite her already being engaged to a man from Islamabad.
The law graduate moved to Pakistan from the UK two months ago and apparently had to stay in the country because she did not want to pay the hotel quarantine costs if she flew back to Britain.
A family member told the Daily Mail: “She didn’t want to come back and pay all that money to quarantine in Britain so decided to stay in Lahore, where she was living with her grandmother.
“She was angry that it was too much money for 10 days in a grotty hotel.
“Instead, she thought she’d have more fun in Lahore and was having a lovely time after making a new group of friends.”
