A Shropshire farmer is encouraging others to help him develop ‘bee road’ meadows.
A farmer is pushing other farmers to follow in his footsteps and build wildflower fields to help bees thrive.
Chris Jerman of Chirbury, Shropshire, began creating the meadows for pollinating insects in 2019 and claimed the response has been fantastic.
“The level of goodwill it has generated in the local community has been phenomenal,” he remarked.
Mr. Jerman has encouraged other farmers to join him in creating a “bee road” for the insects.
The plan is to establish a network of wildflower meadows so that bees can easily travel over the countryside and find a food supply.
Arla Foods UK, a milk co-operative, organized the experiment with the goal of reversing bee declines.
Mr Jerman was assisted by a wildflower expert in selecting a selection of plants that bloom at different times of the year.
“What’s great about them is that they don’t like fertile land, so we don’t have to give up the best parts of the farm that generate all of your food,” he explained. “We want the worst aspects if anything.”
