Iran may eventually join Makkah Defence Alliance: Russian FM

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has described the Makkah Defence Alliance as a significant step towards regional security, saying Iran could eventually become part of the grouping.

Speaking at a ceremony in Moscow, Lavrov also said the possible inclusion of Egypt and Algeria would be a positive development and could strengthen efforts to advance Russia’s regional security concept.

Lavrov called the formation of the Makkah Defence Alliance a significant development for regional security and said it could become an effective mechanism for cooperation in the region. He said Iran could eventually join the alliance, potentially bringing another major regional power into the emerging security framework.

“If Egypt and Algeria join, it will be a positive development too,” Lavrov said, referring to the possible expansion of the alliance.

Russia sees alliance as practical step

The Russian foreign minister said the alliance could play an important role in putting Moscow’s proposed regional security framework into practice.

He described the development as a “very good practical step” towards implementing the Russian concept of regional security that Moscow had initially proposed.

Lavrov’s comments underline Russia’s support for broader regional cooperation and the potential role of the Makkah Defence Alliance in strengthening security arrangements.
