The wife of notorious Mexican former drug cartel leader ‘El Chapo’ has been arrested over her alleged involvement in international drug trafficking, officials have said.
Emma Coronel Aispuro, the spouse of imprisoned Sinaloa drug cartel leader Joaquin Guzman was detained on Monday, the US Department of Justice has confirmed.
The 31-year-old, a regular attendee at her husband’s trial two years ago, was arrested at Dulles International Airport in northern Virginia.
She is expected to appear in a federal court in Washington on Tuesday.
Coronel was charged in a one-count complaint with conspiring to distribute heroin, cocaine, marijuana and methamphetamines for unlawful importation into the United States, the Justice Department said.
A lawyer for Coronel could not immediately be identified.
Guzman was convicted in February 2019 of trafficking tons of drugs and engaging in multiple murder conspiracies.
He was a top leader of the Sinaloa Cartel, one of Mexico’s largest, most violent drug trafficking organisations.
El Chapo was sentenced to life in prison last year.
The 62-year-old arrived at in the ‘Alcatraz of the Rockies’ at the ADX Florence superman prison in Colorado in July 2019.
He was found guilty of 10 counts of various drug trafficking charges at a US District Court in Brooklyn, New York City.
Coronel’s arrest comes a day after she shared a picture of herself in a wedding dress on Sunday.
The model is considered an Instagram influencer with over 422,000 followers despite not being very active on the social media platform.
She had only posted four pictures before yesterday, when she published the wedding dress snap as her fifth photo.
Her last post was in July when she celebrated her birthday.
The latest snap shows the model with a new blonde look adopted a few weeks ago posing in a flowing wedding dress designed by Benito Santos.
According to the newspaper Infobae, the model has signed up for a PR campaign for a wedding firm due to be launched next year.
She previously made headlines by starring in the Cartel Crew reality show where she was seen talking with Michel Blanco, son of the drug trafficker Griselda Blanco, who complained about how people treated her.
