Punjab Governor Chaudhary Sarwar has been removed from office by the federal government.

Punjab Governor Chaudhry Mohammad Sarwar was fired by the federal government on Sunday.

The development occurred as political tensions reached a nadir ahead of the voting on Prime Minister Imran Khan’s no-trust resolution.

Fawad Chaudhry, the Federal Minister of Information and Broadcasting, announced the government’s decision on Twitter.

“The announcement on the new Punjab governor will be made later,” Fawad Chaudhary said, “while the deputy speaker of the [provincial parliament] will serve as acting governor in the meanwhile.”

According to sources, Sarwar was fired from his role at the behest of PML-Q leader and Punjab Assembly Speaker Chaudhary Pervez Elahi.

According to sources, Sarwar was purportedly coordinating the election campaign for Hamza Shehbaz.
