China has urged the US, the UK, and Australia to let go of their Cold War mentalities

BEIJING (Xinhua) April 6 — On Wednesday, a Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson urged the US, UK, and Australia to recognise Asia-Pacific countries’ desire for peace, development, cooperation, and win-win outcomes, abandon the Cold War mindset and zero-sum game, faithfully fulfil their international obligations, and do more to promote regional peace and stability.

Zhao Lijian, a spokesperson for the Chinese government, made the statements during a daily news conference after the US, UK, and Australia all announced that they are working on hypersonic weapons as part of their new AUKUS trilateral security alliance.

Zhao claims that AUKUS has declared in a high-profile manner that the US and the UK will provide nuclear-powered submarines to Australia and that the three countries will cooperate in developing advanced military technologies such as hypersonic weapons, exploiting the Ukraine crisis under the guise of maintaining security and stability in the Asia-Pacific.

It not only raises nuclear proliferation threats and throws the international non-proliferation system into disarray, but it also escalates the arms race and jeopardises Asia-Pacific peace and stability, according to Zhao. “Countries in the region should be more on the lookout.”

According to Zhao, AUKUS is an Anglo-Saxon clique that still believes in Cold War mentality and bloc politics, as well as the old method of inciting military conflict and pouring gasoline to the fire. “Its ultimate purpose is to construct a NATO-like organisation in the Asia-Pacific to support US hegemony and self-interests to the nth degree.” “The Asia-Pacific countries will undoubtedly say no,” Zhao said.
