Biden is opposed to “Ghost Guns.”

President Joe Biden took efforts on Monday to curb the use of ghost firearms, which are untraceable pistols that frequently turn up at crime scenes, according to law enforcement officials.

Biden advocated new federal legislation aimed at privately manufactured firearms made from do-it-yourself kits bought online or in retailers. It’s tough to track down the owner of the firearms because they don’t have serial numbers.

In a Rose Garden event attended by victims and families of gun violence, Biden remarked, “These guns are weapons of choice for many criminals.” “We’re going to do all we can to take away that option from them, and when we find them, we’re going to throw them in jail for a long time.”

Unfinished gun kit elements, such as a handgun’s frame or a long gun’s receiver, would qualify as weapons under federal law, according to the guidelines, which have been in the works for about a year.

Commercial kit manufacturers will be required to get a license and include serial numbers on the kits’ frame or receiver. Before executing a transaction, commercial vendors of the kits will be required to obtain a license and complete background checks on potential customers, much as they do now.

Biden also said that he intends to nominate Steve Dettelbach, a former US attorney from Ohio, to lead the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives.

The ATF is the federal agency in responsibility of enforcing gun laws in the United States.

In addition to the new laws, Biden called on Congress to prohibit the sale and possession of “ghost guns.”

Biden’s proposals will almost surely face stiff opposition from the gun lobby.

The group encouraged Congress to invoke the Congressional Review Act, which allows lawmakers to overturn federal agency rules, to halt the rule’s implementation.

Gun control activists hailed the new limits.

“Ghost guns look like a gun, shoot like a gun, and kill like a gun,” said John Feinblatt, president of Everytown for Gun Safety. “But they haven’t been regulated like a gun up until now,” he said.
