Battle for Donbas began as Russia launched an operation.
According to Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky, Russia has launched an offensive on Ukraine’s eastern Donbas region.
Moscow launched rocket and artillery attacks on cities, and Mr Zelensky declared the “battle for the Donbas has begun” in a televised speech.
According to Ukraine’s top security official, Oleksiy Danilov, Russia attempted to break through Ukrainian front lines in the region.
The offensive had been expected for a long time after Russia’s failure to seize Kyiv.
At first, Russia appeared to want to take control of important Ukrainian cities and overthrow the government.
However, after encountering fierce opposition, Russian defense officials declared that the “first stage of the operation’s” main objective had been accomplished.
