Officials in charge of federal lands must assess mature forests within a year and identify hazards to the trees, according to Biden’s order.

The White House noted in a statement that “America’s woods are a critical climate answer, absorbing carbon dioxide equivalent to more than 10% of US yearly greenhouse gas emissions.”

“Many of the nation’s mature and old-growth forests, which serve as essential carbon sinks, valued landscapes, and distinctive habitats, are found on federal lands.”

Biden has set high environmental goals during his presidency, and he promptly reversed his Republican predecessor Donald Trump’s decision to withdraw the US from the Paris climate agreements.
